ADVENTURES IN BREWING
Why we love the Aeropress
The AeroPress looks a bit weird... probably because it was invented by the guy who invented the Aerobie flying dics,. But it’s actually the most forgiving, indestructible and easiest to travel with piece of coffee gear you can own. This uses air pressure to plunge a rich, smooth cup of coffee in about two minutes. Like the Moka pot, it's not espresso, but it gets pretty close. It’s perfect for travel, camping, or just a zero-fuss morning at home.
Before we dive in: There are many methods of brewing including an inverted method. We used to use the inverted method until we got the Aeropress flow control cap. But for this guide, we are using the standard AeroPress right-side up.
What you need
- Coffee
- an Aeropress
- a scale or a TBSP scoop
- a grinder if you're using whole bean coffee
- a spoon to stir
- filters (either paper or metal)
- optional, the aeropress flow control cap seems to make tastier coffee but also makes it so it doesn't drip into the mug before you want
Our recipe
- Coffee: 15–20 grams (this is about one scoop using the plastic scoop that came in the box)... but we often do 20g.
- Grind Size: Medium-Fine (Like table salt. Finer than French Press, a little finer than your V60 pour-over).
- Water: Hot water brought to a boil, then let sit for about a minute to cool slightly (the AeroPress actually loves slightly cooler water, around 175°F to 185°F if you’re a nerd about it, but hot but not boiling works perfectly).
The prep work
Pop a paper (or metal) filter into the black plastic cap and twist it onto the bottom of the main chamber. Set the chamber directly onto your favorite mug. (Optional: Pour a quick splash of hot water through the filter into the mug to rinse it, then dump that water out).
Coffee + water
Dump your scoop of coffee grounds into the chamber. Give it a shake to level it out. Pour your hot water in, filling it to the Number 3 printed on the side of the chamber for a more concentrated brew or to the 4 for a more drip coffee-like brew.
Stir and seal
Give it a gentle stir with the plastic paddle (or a spoon) for about 10 seconds just to make sure all the grounds are wet. Next, take the rubber plunger part and insert it just a tiny bit into the top of the chamber at an angle, then pull up slightly. Pulling up creates a vacuum seal that stops the water from dripping through too early. An Aeropress flow control cap solves this and seems add some richer flavor we love. Let it sit for 2 minutes.
Take the plunge
Put one hand securely on your mug, place your other hand on top of the plunger, and press down gently and steadily. This pushes the air which pushes the water through the coffee. Don't use your whole body weight, if it feels too tought, you're pushing too hard, pull up the plunger a bit and plunge again. Once the plunger hits the bottom and you hear a long hiss sound, stop. You’re done.
How to Drink It
Clean-Up Trick
Clean up is super simple if you use paper filters. Twist off the black cap over your trash can or compost bin, push the plunger all the way down and it will pop out a neat, solid "puck" of compressed coffee grounds. Rinse the Aeropress and you're good to go.
How to Drink It
This brew is incredibly smooth with very low acidity and it gives you a concentrated cup. You can drink it straight like a heavy shot, top it off with hot water for a clean mug of black coffee or add milk.
