ADVENTURES IN BREWING
Why we love the French Press
If you want a cup of coffee with some body, texture and weight to it, go for the French Press. AND it's super easy to use. French press is the ultimate lazy-Sunday (or any day) brew method because it’s almost impossible to screw up, doesn't need paper filters and lets the coffee oils shine.
Before we dive in: Always look at your specific manufacturer’s instructions first. Glass can crack if you handle it wrong and metal presses have their own insulation quirks.
For this guide, we’re dialed into the standard: the 8-Cup (34 oz) French Press.
What you need
- Coffee
- a French press
- a scale or a TBSP scoop
- a grinder if you're using whole bean coffee
- a spoon to stir
Our recipe
- Coffee: 50–55 grams (About 7 to 8 tablespoons of whole beans).
- Grind Size: Coarse (Think sea salt or cracked black pepper. If it's too fine, it'll sneak past the metal screen and turn your coffee into sludge).
- Water: Fresh water, filtered is best. Have it just off the boil (about 30 seconds).
The ground work
Dump your coarse grounds into the empty press. Pour in just enough hot water to wet all the grounds (about a cup), give it a gentle swirl or a stir with a spoon and let it sit for 30 to 45 seconds. The coffee will bubble and swell... that’s the coffee waking up.
Fill it up
Pour the rest of your hot water to about an inch below the top rim, or the line if your press is marked. Place the lid on to keep it hot but DO NOT push the plunger down.
The waiting game
Set a timer for 4 minutes and walk away. Go pet the dog, check your email or just stare blankly out the window
Choose your own adventure
Ok. Now you have two choices, try both and see what you like best.
Choice 1:
When your timer goes off, gently and steadily press the plunger down. If you hit massive resistance, back up an inch and press again. Don't force it down good things take time.
Choice 2:
Do not press. Take the top off and gently stir/push down the grinds which should be floating at the top. Make sure they fall to the ground bottom of of the press. Wait four more minutes. Then plunge down and enjoy.
How to Drink It
Black, with a splash of half-and-half, or a spoonful (or half cupful) of sugar. The French Press gives you a rich, full-bodied cup that can handle whatever you want to throw at it.
