ADVENTURES IN BREWING
Why we love the moka pot
The Moka Pot is a classic for a reason. It’s heavy duty, it lives on your stoveto, and it makes a thick, rich, concentrated cup that is super easy and comes close to the taste of espresso... In fact it's often called a stovetop espresso. We just call it a great morning.
Before we get into it: Always look at your specific manufacturer’s instructions first. Every moka pot has its own personality.
For this guide, we're using the most common size 3-Cup moka pot, though the video shows a cute 2-cup version ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And remember, in the moka pot world, a "cup" means a tiny espresso-sized cup, not your favorite giant mug.
What you need
- Coffee
- a moka pot
- scale or a TBSP scoop
- a grinder if you're using whole bean coffee
Our recipe
- Coffee: 15–17 grams (About 2.5 to 3 tablespoons)
- Grind Size: Fine (Like table salt. Coarser than regular espresso, but finer than your standard drip coffee).
- Water: Fresh water, filtered is best.
Fill the water chamber
Pour water into the bottom chamber. Stop right when the water reaches the bottom of the safety valve... do not cover the valve with water.
You can use hot water just off the kettle. This saves time and keeps the grounds from "baking". If you do this use a towel to hold the chamber because it will get hot.
Load the coffee basket
Drop the metal funnel basket into the base and fill it up to the brim with about 15-17 grams your finely ground coffee.
- Important: Don't tamp down the coffee. Instead level off the coffee grounds with your finger, a knife or whatever you have. And remember do not tamp it down.
Screw it... together
Twist the top chamber onto the base. Make sure it's tight so steam doesn't escape from the sides, but do not go all body builder on it and over tighten.
Turn up the heat
Put the pot on your stove over medium to medium-low heat. Medium low is perfect usually perfect and allows the coffee to flow at the right speed. If you're using a gas stove, make sure the flames don't wrap around the side of the pot. You just want to heat the bottom. Leave the top lid open because honestly, it's fun to watch it brew.
Watch and listen
If you want to stop the cooking process instantly, run the bottom base under cold tap water right after taking it off the stove.
Because this makes a concentrated brew, you can drink it straight, top it off with hot water for an Americano style or mix it with warm milk for an at-home latte. There are no rules here.
How to Drink It
Black, with a splash of half-and-half, or a spoonful (or half cupful) of sugar. The French Press gives you a rich, full-bodied cup that can handle whatever you want to throw at it.
