ADVENTURES IN BREWING

Why we love the Clever Dripper

If you love the smooth, rich flavor of a French Press but only need one cup and want SIMPLE cleanup, the Clever Dripper is your new best friend. It looks like a standard pour-over cone but has a valve at the bottom that keeps the water trapped so it brews like an immersion brewer. It is arguably the easiest, most consistent, and most forgiving way to make an incredible cup of coffee, even more so than the Aeropress.

Before we dive in: Always look at your specific manufacturer’s instructions first. They are made of durable plastic, but you still want to handle the bottom valve with care.

We have some Clever Drippers available in our shop.

What you need

  • Coffee
  • a Clever Dripper
  • a scale or a TBSP scoop
  • a grinder if you're using whole bean coffee
  • a spoon to stir
  • a standard #4 filter

Our recipe

  • Coffee: 15–20 grams (this is about one scoop using the plastic scoop that came in the box)... but we often do 20g.
  • Grind Size: Medium-Fine (Like table salt. Finer than French Press, a little finer than your V60 pour-over).
  • Water: Hot water brought to a boil, then let sit for about a minute to cool slightly (the AeroPress actually loves slightly cooler water, around 175°F to 185°F if you’re a nerd about it, but hot but not boiling works perfectly).
1

Easy origami

Fold the crimped edges of your #4 paper filter, drop it into the Clever Dripper and set the whole thing flat on your counter. Pour a quick splash of hot water through the empty filter to rinse away any papery taste. Crucial Move: Pick up the dripper and set it on top of a spare mug to let that rinse water drain out, then dump the rinse water. Put the dripper back on the flat counter.

2

Fill 'er up

Dump your medium-ground coffee into the paper filter and give it a little shake to level it out. Now, pour all of your hot water right over the grounds. Don't worry about fancy spirals or pouring techniques just pour it all in. And alternative way is to put the water in and then the grounds.

3

The old stir and steep

Give the coffee and water a quick, gentle stir with a spoon to make sure every single coffee ground is wet. Let it sit there right on your counter for 3 minutes... maybe listen to a good song maybe Vacation by the Go-Gos which is exactly 3 minutes. You can put the lid on if you'd like.

4

Get ready to drink

After 3 minutes, take the lid off and give the top layer a quick stir (you'll see a light foam break apart). Pick up the Clever Dripper and set it directly on top of your favorite large coffee mug. The weight of the dripper automatically opens the valve, and beautiful, smooth coffee will drain straight into your cup. It takes about 45 seconds to finish draining.

How to Drink It

The Clever Dripper gives you something between a drip machine and a French press. If you're currently using a pod machine this is a great, easy way to get into doing single serve that tastes better.
